Sleng Teng is the name given to the first fully computerised riddim in Jamaican music. As is normal in Jamaican music, the riddim was named after the first vocal track released using it, namely Wayne Smith's "Under Mi Sleng Teng". The riddim itself is allegedly an attempt to recreate Eddie Cochran's "Something Else". It is a pattern built into the Casio MT-40 home keyboard.

Big Mickey Dread did a sleng teng extravaganza remix a year ago and I was inspired to do a follow.up. So here it is, Sleng Teng Extravaganza vol. 2

Laurenzo Aitken was born in Cuba in apil 1927 but moved to Jamaican with his family in 1938. Laurel become quickly interested in music and did as many other young fellows in Jamaianca at this time, sung on the streets and entertained turists. A matter of course at this time for Laurel was the talent shows held every now and then in the 1950ies in Jamaica. The jamaican music industry blossom and more and more domestic artists was recorded ans released on 78 rpm records. Mostly mento, calypso and blues was recorded and Laurel did his debut record in 1957 on the label Caribou.

When the 1950ies turn in to the 1960ies Laurel's carrier did a leap forward in development with the recording if "Aitken's boogie" - one of the first real Jamaican R'n'B tunes. When Laurel recorded "Little Sheila" and "Boogie in my bones" the ska era took another step forward. However, Laurel was'nt that active in Jamaica at in the 1960ies 'cus he has immigrated to England in 1960.

In England Laurel became one of the big icons for Jamaican music. He recorded some rude tunes about women, sex and alcohol and started produce tunes as a complement to the singing. When a toothless Jerry Dammers started 2 Tone Records and the second ska era swept over the world Laurel Aitken had another carrier. He recorded some new tunes and in 1981 his "Rudy got married" made it to the lists. After the 2 Tone era Laurel was highty requested in the whole world and toured a lot. When he passed away in july 2005 it was a great loss for the jamaican music and everybody who love it.
